The Sacramento County Main Jail provides the primary services for the incarceration and detention of individuals for the Sacramento County Sheriff’s Department and surrounding outside agencies and city jurisdictions. You can confirm the location of an inmate at our Inmate Search and Contact page.
Visiting an Inmate?
Each inmate is allowed only two visits per week (Sunday through Saturday). Each visit is limited to 45 minutes. Visiting hours are every hour from 7:45AM through 9:45PM, except for meal time between 2:45PM to 4:45PM.
There are very strict procedures that must be followed when visiting an inmate:
A maximum of three people are allowed per visit.
A valid identification must be provided in order to visit.
No Reservations, all visits are scheduled based on first come first served, based on the available time and space.
Weekends are busy – Keep in mind that weekends at the Main Jail are very crowded with visitors, so should plan on likely delays.
Dress Code: Visitors of inmates must adhere to a strict dress code, otherwise they will not be allowed for visitations. Examples of clothing that is not permitted includes: Tank Tops; Tube Tops; sleeveless or backless tops; midriff or cutoff shirts; bathing suit tops; see through fish net or mesh fabrics; short shorts or mini-skirts; any clothing that is provocative or promotes violence, drugs, hate, sex, gangs, etc.
Visitors Age Limit: Visitors must be 18 years old. Minors must be supervised at all times by an adult. Other restrictions regarding minors apply, click the link above for more details.
Personal Search: Visitors are subject to being searched, of their person and property. The only personal items that are allowed are keys, wallet and a valid identification.
Family Emergencies: If there is a serious family related emergency you can contact the Social Worker at the Main Jail at (916) 874-6345, or contact the Jail Chaplain at (916) 874- 7724. They are available 8:30 AM- 3:30 PM Monday through Friday.
Mail Correspondence: All mail must adhere to strict rules and regulations, otherwise it will be returned to the sender, unless it contains something illegal, then it may be stored kept as evidence and you may be subject to prosecution. Your envelope must have a legible return address, otherwise it may be discarded or returned.

Care packages: There are strict limitations from sending or bringing certain personal items such as gifts, snacks, stationary, and personal items. The Sacramento County Main Jail has a commissary that offers “in-jail” and “on-line” care packages that can be purchased for an inmate. Click on the “County Jail” link above and look for the “iCare Packages” link. This is the only service available to provide a gift to an inmate.
Release of Inmates Personal Property: A Property Release Form is available in the public lobby at the main jail, an acceptable form if identification will be required, and of course additional restrictions will apply.
